Aurongo: Māori Ancestral Understandings and Expressions of Emotions explores the role of whakataukī in expressing and understanding emotions through Māori worldviews. Passed down through generations, whakataukī are repositories of mātauranga Māori that provide guidance, affirm values, and offer insights into human behaviour, relationships, and wellbeing. Grounded in te reo Māori, ancestral knowledge, and connections to the natural world, they remain highly relevant today. This publication highlights how Indigenous understandings of emotions can support wellbeing and decolonise contemporary perspectives. Drawing on the Ngā Kare-ā-roto research project, it presents nearly 90 whakataukī reflecting Māori emotional knowledge and cultural wisdom.
